A dull pair of scissors is easy to spot – instead of cutting through the material, it grabs, tears and binds. With the right method, you can restore the edge in just a few minutes.
In this video, we use a Dianova Classic diamond sharpener to sharpen scissors. The flat diamond surface provides excellent control over the bevel and works just as well for scissors, pruning shears and other edged tools.
The Problem: Scissors Don't Cut Cleanly
When scissors become dull, they push material apart instead of cutting through it. This is especially noticeable on fabric – or even worse, hair. The result:
- They snag or tear their way through the material
- They leave frayed edges
- They require more force than normal
In most cases, the problem is simply that the edge has become rounded – not that the scissors are “bad”.
The Solution: Sharpen the Bevel – Not the Entire Blade
The important thing is to sharpen only the existing bevel on the scissors blade – exactly as shown in the video.
