Sharpening bypass pruners correctly means sharpening only one side of the blade. This guide shows you how to do it quickly and without damaging the edge.

How bypass pruners work
Bypass pruners cut with the blade passing by the counter surface, similar to scissors. This produces clean cuts – but only if the beveled side is sharpened correctly.
How to sharpen bypass pruners
- Open the pruners as wide as possible to access the blade
- Place the diamond sharpener against the beveled edge
- Follow the existing angle and file along the edge
- Continue until the edge becomes smooth and even
- Lightly remove the burr from the inside
Important: only sharpen the beveled side
Do not sharpen the flat side of the blade or the counter surface. This will create a gap and reduce cutting performance.

Why removing the burr matters
A remaining burr will cause the edge to lose sharpness quickly. Always remove it with light strokes on both sides.
